Compare the Honda Civic Against the Toyota Corolla

New Honda Civic & Toyota Corolla Head to Head Comparison

The Honda Civic is a model that hardly needs an introduction. It's been cruising the Troy roads and beyond for decades and has been a popular pick for drivers who want an affordable, reliable, and well-equipped model. Its main target is young professionals who likely don't have the funds for an expensive-to-buy or maintain vehicle, but still need a mode of transportation that looks good and won't let them down when they go to turn the key in the morning. Keep reading to learn more about the Honda Civic vs. the Toyota Corolla.

We at Voss Honda, located in Tipp City, obviously hold the Civic in high-regards, but it's not the only strong competitor in the segment. Its longtime rival is the Toyota Corolla, and for years the two have been keeping each other on their toes.

Technology Comparison -  Honda Civic against the Toyota Corolla

These vehicles may be considered "entry-level", but because they're aimed at a younger market it's crucial that they have attractive technology features, or else tech savvy shoppers will bypass them.

All Civic's come with at least a helpful backup camera and Bluetooth that allows drivers to stream music and take hands-free calls. If you move past the base trim you'll get a 7-inch touchscreen, and instead of using HondaLink™ you can use either Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ smartphone integrations for your infotainment display! Navigation is available on the EX-L and standard on the Touring.

The Corolla has the same standard tech features, though all trims get a touchscreen that starts at 6.1-inches on the base and goes up to 7-inches. However, you currently cannot get Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ with the Corolla. In fact, it wasn't until the redesigned 2019 Toyota Avalon that Toyota teamed up with Apple CarPlay™! Navigation is optional starting at the XLE trim and like the Civic it's standard on the top trim.

Safety & Security of the Honda Civic versus the Toyota Corolla

Both Honda and Toyota have their own advanced safety packages.

Honda Sensing® includes: Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Braking System, and Forward Collision Warning.

Toyota Safety Sense® includes: Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Pre-Collision Alert with Pedestrian Detection, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Toyota Safety Sense® is standard on all Corolla trims. Honda Sensing® is available on the all trims, minus the manual version of the base, and is standard on the top trim.

Some shoppers might see that as a downside for the Civic, but not everyone wants to get alerts and warnings as they commute from Dayton. We like that the options are still available, but not forced upon the drivers.

Other safety amenities you can find on the Civic include standard LED daytime running lights, LED lights on the top trim level, and the nifty Honda LaneWatch™ feature. Honda LaneWatch™ is a camera that is mounted on the passenger-side mirror. When you activate it, it shows you what's in your right-side blind spot. The Corolla's extra safety features include Bi-LED lights on the first two trims and multi-LED lights starting with the XLE. There's no other cameras or blind spot monitoring.

Space and Performance Difference of the Honda Civic & Toyota Corolla

Sedans are not expected to be haulers but having a bit of space outback for groceries or luggage is important. The Civic's trunk is 15.1 cubic feet, which is notably larger than the Corolla's 13 cubic foot trunk. Both have the same front passenger legroom, though the Corolla does have more rear-passenger legroom.

An area where the Corolla really lags behind the Civic is under the hood. Most Corolla's have a 1.8L engine with 132 horsepower, though the LE Eco is slightly stronger with 140 horsepower. The Civic's LX and EX have 2.0L engine with 158 horsepower and the remaining trims have a 1.5L with 174 horsepower! The Civic's much stronger engines will give you more confidence behind the wheel when you're driving in Fairborn or, more importantly, if you're gearing up to pass someone on the highway.

Body Style Variety Between the Honda Civic & Toyota Corolla

Another thing to keep in mind is that we've been comparing two sedan models. The Corolla only comes as a sedan, but the Civic has a few other body styles to choose from. If you want more space and a slightly edgier look, you can get the Honda Civic Hatchback. For comparison sake, you'll get 25.7/46.2 cubic feet of space with the hatchback. There's also a sporty Si, 2-door coupe, and the impressive Honda Civic Type R, which is an enthusiast's dream! We're pleased to be able to provide shoppers, like those we serve from Beavercreek, with the sedan, hatchback, and coupe options!

As you can see, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla or both strong options, but there are several reasons why the Civic still stands out in our eyes. We love the ability to get Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ on most trims, shoppers can choose if they want advanced safety technologies, and you'll get more trunk space. We also appreciate that shoppers can show off their personality with the different body styles and that the Civic clearly has a stronger engine lineup!

So, what are you waiting for? Stop into our dealership this week to test drive the popular and respected Honda Civic! Whether you choose to go with an attractive lease offer or finance the model for the long run, we know you're going to be impressed.
